Railway applications demand highest reliability and quality of all used materials, consequently the regulations are very strict. Safety is the top priority for such applications. In order to ensure this, all technical requirements were incorporated in the French railway standard NFF 16-101. This standard focuses particularly on fire behaviour and smoke development.
The flammability and dripping behaviour of a material, according to EN ISO 11925-2, is measured by means of extensive tests. The ignition behaviour is determined using glow wire test according to EN 60695-2-10 combined with measurements of the oxygen index according to ISO 4589-2. The fire protection classification is carried out on bases of following criteria: opacity (NF X 10-702), toxicity (NF 70-100) and smoke index (NF F 16-101).
